Jubilee Row

PGRC decided to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the 70th anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II to the throne, with an afternoon row to a beach tea party. Wearing crowns produced by a member or hats and other suitable attire, members rowed our two training gigs ‘Great Ope’ and ‘Big Ope’ across Portland Harbour to Sandsfoot beach where they were met by other members.

As the boats were being set up the weather looked a little ‘iffy’ with slight drizzle. However it perked up allowing a good row across.

Some of our members had made and provided five varieties of cakes  along with some Prosecco. The Prosecco was used for a rousing toast to the Queen and the cakes were enjoyed by all.

Although the sun only showed itself for a short time the party and spirits were not dampened. The row back was a little tougher than the row over, was this a slight deterioration in the weather or, as some of the rowers felt, maybe because they had sampled a few too many cakes. Regardless, all enjoyed the row back. When the gigs had returned to the pontoon berths at boatfolk’s Portland Marina, our members were invited to enjoy even more cake, this time provided by boatfolk staff.

The afternoon was enjoyed by all that participated. A big thankyou from PGRC to all the members that were involved in arranging and supplying food, drink and party items.
