Weymouth Regatta
Our first regatta of the year and what better way to start than rowing to the venue. Club members rowed our gig Pulpit Rock, the 3.5 miles to Weymouth beach in the sun with only a light breeze, where many other members had already selected a spot on the sand and set up our event tent.
The regatta was open to all gig clubs, however within the main regatta there was also the 1st round of the Jurassic League, so we were racing to achieve overall positions in each race but also positions relative to the other Jurassic clubs.
There was a good turnout of clubs with Jurassic crews from Exmouth, Sidmouth, Lyme Regis, Langstone, Swanage, Weymouth, Portland, Bridport, Poole and Combwich gig clubs, joined by gigs from other parts of the South West including Appledore, Dartmouth, Ilfracombe, Brixham, Portishead, Bristol and Culdrose. Races were open to all clubs with the adult race classes consisting of between ten and seventeen gigs.
Portland entered crews in the Ladies A, Men’s A, Men’s B, Men’s Vets and mixed races. All crews gave it their all, rowing hard and strong. There were a few challenging moments, where other gigs collided with Pulpit Rock and impeded some of our rowers. Our coxes and rowers did their best to overcome these moments whilst giving suitable advice to the other crews.
Our race results were; Ladies A – 7th Jurassic (12th overall), Men’s A – 6th Jurassic (10th overall), Men’s B – 1st Jurassic (4th overall), Men’s Vets – 3rd Jurassic (5th overall) and Mixed – 4th Jurassic (9th overall). Portland’s overall position at the end of the day was 6th within the Jurassic League and 13th overall.
Congratulations to the men’s B crew who were awarded Jurassic 1st place medals and well done to all the Portland rowers, coxes, helpers and supporters that attended the regatta. Thank you Weymouth Rowing Club for an excellent day.
