Portland Marina 24 hour Row-a-thon

Portland Marina’s 24-Hour Row-A-Thon Smashes Target for Cancer Charity

Several members of PGRC joined forces with staff at Portland Marina rowing non-stop for 24 hours straight to raise money for young cancer survivors and absolutely smashed it.

Kicking off at 9am on Wednesday 16 July and clocking their final strokes at 9am the next day, the rowers put in an eye-watering 490km. That’s nearly five laps of the Isle of Wight and 190km over the Marina’s original 300km target.

It was all in aid of the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, a charity that gets young people affected by cancer out on the water to help rebuild their confidence and wellbeing.

The total raised so far is more than £800.00 and counting. PGRC rowers clocked up just under 134km, with local legend Jenny, rowing a jaw-dropping 26km between 3:30 and 5:30am. Who needs sleep when you’ve got grit like that?

The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust has helped over 3,500 young people with sailing trips, giving them strength, community, and a proper dose of sea air after the storm of cancer treatment.

The Portland Marina team said they were blown away by the support and extended huge thanks to everyone who rowed, donated, or cheered them on, especially the Gig Rowers for going above and beyond.
