Portland Gig Rowing Club
Welcome to the Portland Gig Rowing Club website.
Portland Gig Rowing Club is a community based Charity and was formed in March 2009.
The aim of the Club is to offer the sport of Cornish Pilot Gig Rowing to any person who wishes to try gig rowing, thereby encouraging fitness and spirit within the community. Rowing is a good way to improve fitness, enjoy the local environment and meet new people.
The Club is open to all members of the community. Adults of any age or young persons age 11 years or over are welcome to join the Club. We welcome non rowers and accomplished rowers alike and offer three free taster sessions to those new to the sport.
We are based at Portland Marina, Osprey Quay and row throughout the year, during the week and at weekends, offering social and competitive rowing. See the ‘Rowing, Sessions’ section for further details of our current rowing programme.
Cornish Pilot Gigs are 32 foot long and seat six oarsmen/women, a coxswain and a passenger. They were traditionally used to ferry marine pilots to and from large sailing vessels to assist them with their passage into and out of Cornish estuary ports. Gigs were also used as lifeboats and some say sometimes for smuggling.
